Beauty is always on trend. And fitness is a trend that is only on its way up. People have been onto the health benefits of exercise for centuries but the studies continue to get better and better. Health researchers now have a ‘healthy’ amount of evidence to support the fact that improved fitness is connected directly to your skin, hair, sleep, nails and overall beauty. These are just some of the perks that prove fitness makes a more radiant, gorgeous you.
Working up a good sweat is equivalent to getting a mini facial… umm #yesplease. Audrey Kunin, MD dermatologist and author of The DERMAdoctor Skinstruction Manual says “When the pores dilate, sweat expels trapped dirt and oil. Just be sure to wash your face afterward so the gunk doesn’t get sucked back into the pores.” Spending less money on gimmick products and more on your health and fitness will have you looking and feeling amazing. We just need to trust the process.
Exercising regulates hormones that are significant to your skin and prevent the damage of free radicals. Does anyone else get irritated when their dermatologist or esthetician tells you ‘it’s hormonal’ acne? I do. Apparently, if I worked out more they’d have to give up that excuse because my blemishes would significantly diminish. Balancing hormones through consistent doses of exercise has helped women of all ages with estrogen, testosterone and thyroid hormone levels and skin cell renewal through blood circulation.
Less Stress = Less Wrinkles
Stress, anxiety and uncertainty drain us all and it tends to show on our faces, stripping the smiles and surprising us with unwanted wrinkles. It’s been suggested by sport psychologists and experts that as little as 15 minutes of exercise in a day can bestow a calm that can last for hours. For the biggest response HIIT exercises, running, cycling, swimming or a mixture of aerobic and weight training are recommended.
If sleeping beauty was a real person I would be open to taking her name. So many nights I lay awake and know that my energy should have been managed better during the day… my body may be exhausted yet my mental state is still wound up, leaving me with dark circles and a bad attitude in the AM. Having a fitness routine dramatically helps this. Exercise sharpens the body’s sensitivity to the stress hormone cortisol, which can enhance sleep. It is essential for the release for cortisol (the thing that keeps me wound up at night when I don’t get a good workout in), helping to sleep sound and look more refreshed come morning. When asleep, the body can use this time to repair tissue, immunity and help us look and feel great.
In a world that tells us that we should be having knockout firework sex every night, always have our legs shaved and a guy with a 6 pack to get turned on, it’s a lot of pressure. On both sides of the party. It takes two to tango but what if your fitness regiment not only made you look sexy, but also feel sexy by balancing your sex hormone levels? Endorphins, sex hormones like testosterone and human growth hormone also get a boost with adults who exercise frequently. What is important here is you will love yourself more for you, not your partner or IG followers.
The point is, a pill, injection or salve can’t replicate the benefits of a good workout. Exercise doesn’t just effect our beauty but boosts virtually every system in our body. They all work together to ultimately make us look and feel our best when we treat ourselves with love. Don’t wait for tomorrow to start improving your health and ultimately your life.
