Whenever the holiday season approaches, the heavenly scents of Christmas candles, Thanksgiving Day meals, apple cider and cinnamon sticks all come to mind. Scents can communicate a personal signature or place of warmth and love, but each of us have our own idea and emotion that connects with what we like or dislike. No matter what scent it may be that you prefer, do you ever think about what is in it?
It wasn’t until recently that I recognized no matter how heavenly my body wash, laundry detergent or perfume smelled, there were hidden chemicals and ingredients in each that have been damaging my skin and health for my entire lifespan. It’s a well kept hidden secret in the fragrance industry that there is an unlabeled presence of toxic chemicals in all of our personal care products that include scents. Lab tests commissioned by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and analyzed by the EWG (source via naturalawakenings.com) confirmed paragons that interfere with hormone production, cancer-causing phthalates, and synthetic musks that have been linked to many illnesses. It truly blows my mind that the lotions and deodorants we place use on a daily basis are putting these chemicals directly into our bodies!!! We need to wake up and make change. Especially when we have the ability at our fingertips to use natural essential oils that are toxin-free that feel and SMELL better than the fake and chemically infested fragrances we use! Not only do they feel and smell better, but they have proven benefits of aromatherapy/therapeutic value! Lavender oil for instance, has properties similar to those of a mild-dose narcotic (ibuprofen, advil, etc.) including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and pain-relieving alternatives! How is it that we do not consider this with all of the benefits before inhaling drugs and other unnatural approaches?!
From our Aura research and findings on naturally safe scents, we’ve decided to make the rest of this post a ‘How-To’ fun way for beginners to experiment and test out organic essential oils to create their own blends that can become a Heavenly SCENT and even personal signature in place of their old chemically induced aromas.
How to make your own Natural Oil Fragrances.
There are three basic “notes” to essential oils and blending them in the right manner will result in bold and flavorful scents that can last through an entire day. There are no hard or intricate rules in regards to creating your own aroma blend, you just need to test out what you like and then you can start incorporating each into your daily life via body, home and gifting the knowledge and benefits to your loved ones!
Base notes: Sandalwood, Jasmine, Myrrh, Vetiver, Patchouli, Cedarwood
Middle notes: Lavender, Bergamot, Geranium, Rosemary, Tea Tree, Clary Sage
Top notes: Orange, Lemon, Grapefruit, Eucalyptus, Lime, Peppermint
Base notes are heavier and last longer. Blending a base with a lighter middle note and a light and short lasting top note will create a beautiful blend that is unique and individual to your liking. A general ratio of 50% Base, 30% middle and 20% top notes is recommended (source: auracacia.com). Here’s a nice list of 100% Essential Oils and their details of scents/healing properties.
Once you have your scent created, most oil blends are ready to use immediately. Alcohol-based blends should age a week or two and become more strongly scented with time. You should store your blends in bottles in a dark and cool setting. Bottles with tiny roll caps are available commercially. We found a few great options on Amazon when searching “essential oil empty bottles.”
